Meditation

Life can be busy, wouldn't you agree? You’re managing multiple emails, your phone is on you nearly 24/7, you're using various social media tools, etc. And those are only the virtual responsibilities you carry. Then there are the various levels of relationships to maintain from your friends and family to social responsibilities. And then, of course, there's your professional life which is often very demanding and stressful. There are times when we feel that we're being pulled in a million different directions, juggling more balls than we can manage and we start feeling fearful and anxious that we're not managing our lives effectively.

There's a simple tool that has been around for millennia that is now being supported scientifically to show significant benefits in the wellbeing of participants. You may have heard about it, it's called meditation. Take a look at this quote that highlights just how meditation affects our brain and feelings.

“Brain research shows that 15 minutes a day in meditation or thoughtful communion with the God of love results in measurable development of the prefrontal cortex, especially in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). This is the area where we experience love, compassion and empathy. The healthier the ACC, the calmer the amygdala (alarm center), and the less fear and anxiety we experience.”
- Dr. Timothy Jennings, MD. The God Shaped Brain

So here's an invitation for you: meditate. If you're managed by a calendar, it may be beneficial for you to place a 15 minute appointment to set aside time to engage in this spiritual practice. Here are few simple guidelines:

  • Find a quite spot with no distractions.
  • Turn off your phone or put it on mute.
  • Sit comfortably in a chair with both feet on the ground.
  • Focus on a passage of Scripture or read a devotional that focuses on God's love.
  • Set a timer for 15 minutes and keep your mind focused on the gist of what you've just read.
  • If your mind wanders, gently directly your thoughts back to the topic of focus.

Give this a shot daily for a week and see if what changes you notice in the way go about your day.
