Adventist Health Sonora welcomes psychiatrist David Bohannon, DO
Adventist Health Sonora is pleased to welcome David Bohannon, DO, a psychiatrist who provides evaluations, medication management and treatment for numerous conditions including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and post-traumatic stress disorder. He provides outpatient care at Rural Health, treatment for inpatients receiving acute care at the hospital and consultations for long-term care residents at Adventist Health Sonora’s Sierra Care Center.
“Mental health is an important piece in the whole-person care we provide at Adventist Health,” explains Michelle Fuentes, president of Adventist Health Sonora. “Dr. Bohannon will be a tremendous asset to our medical staff as we seek to improve the health of our community and help our patients achieve a sense of wholeness and hope.”
Bohannon graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Molecular and Microbiology from the University of Central Florida and earned a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed a psychiatry residency at Community Health of South Florida and an internship at Larkin Hospital in South Miami, Fl.
Bohannon was initially inspired by his wife, who is a registered nurse, to pursue a medical career. He also has a strong family connection to Adventist healthcare; both of his parents worked for Florida Hospital and his brother works for Advent Health in Florida.
Bohannon now finds inspiration from his patients. “I have the opportunity to build close relationships with my patients, which is what attracted me to psychiatry,” he explains. “What I find most rewarding is seeing patients recover and live a much higher quality of life.”
Recognizing that people are often afraid to seek psychiatric care because of the stigma, Bohannon explains that there is no reason for people to avoid the care they need. “There is a light at the end of the tunnel,” he says. “There is a great success rate with medications working in conjunction with therapy.”
During his training, Bohannon spent time caring for patients in the Catskill Mountains in Upstate New York where he experienced the serenity of rural life. Upon completing his training, Bohannon and his wife had planned to settle in Southern California but explored the opportunity available with Adventist Health Sonora. They enjoyed the ambiance and the people they met and decided to make Sonora their home.
