Home Is Where the Hospital Is

News

OHSU Hospital at Home pairs acute care with the comfort of home.

Answering the call for more hospital capacity, Adventist Health Portland is partnering with Oregon Health & Science University’s Hospital at Home program to bring hospital-level care into patients’ homes.

Hospital at Home’s personalized in-home care includes hospital-level services like IV therapy, lab tests and imaging as well as instant access to the care team 24 hours every day. Hospital at Home patients recover faster and are less likely to return to the hospital.

Tests of the program during the pandemic proved successful both for patient experience and clinical outcomes. One such patient, Terri Miller, had such a good experience, she said, “There are not enough exclamation points for me to express the caring, compassionate, educational, supportive team that is building this program.”

The program is open to adult patients in the service area with a qualifying diagnosis like congestive heart failure, pneumonia, cellulitis, COVID-19 and more. Once approved, the Hospital at Home team brings communication and clinical equipment to the patient’s home and sets up a schedule of virtual and in-person visits that ensure their safety, comfort and recovery.
